Shopping for Individual and Family Plans Through the Marketplace

This article explains how to shop for and enroll in an Individual and Family Plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace. To begin, read Shopping for Individual and Family Plans Online.

After you choose Shop Marketplace Plans, complete the following steps:

1. Choose when you need coverage, then select Continue.

  • If you're currently enrolled in plans through Via Benefits, your existing plans appear. Select View Plan Details to review your application and update your information.

  • To continue an existing application, follow the on-screen instructions.

2. Select the Primary Contact and review the page. Select Continue if everything's correct.

Note: To update your information, sign in and select Personal Information from the menu under your name at the top of the page. After making your changes, select Save. When you are ready to continue shopping, select Go to Shop for Plans.

3. Provide the required information for each household member who needs coverage, then select Continue.

Note: You can add your spouse and dependents here.

4. Provide the rest of your household information, then select Continue.

5. Based on your estimated income, the estimated monthly savings appear. If you previously selected employer funding, these savings don't apply. This is the estimated Premium Tax Credit (PTC) amount. Select Continue.

6. When outside the Open Enrollment Period (OEP), the following section appears. Select your qualifying event and select Continue. For more information on enrollment periods, see Individual and Family Plan Enrollment Periods.

7. Select How much healthcare you think you'll use and select Continue.

8. Add your preferred doctors, pharmacies, and hospitals, or select Skip this step.

9. Add your prescription drugs or select Skip this step.

10. The Most affordable plan is displayed based on the information you provided. You can also filter plans to view the Lowest premium or All plans.

Notes:

  • The lower Monthly premium shown reflects the PTC. If you decide to use employer funding, this discount doesn't apply. When you select Enroll in this plan or Enroll now, the premium updates to show your correct amount.

  • Each plan tile includes key plan details, such as the deductible, out-of-pocket max, and copays. Select View plan details or Details to view additional information.

When viewing All Plans, use the filters on the left to narrow your results.

11. Select Enroll in this plan or Enroll now when you're ready to enroll in a plan. You'll be taken to the application.

Note: The lower Monthly premium shown reflects the PTC. If you chose employer funding, this discount doesn't apply. The updated premium will be reflected on the application.

12. Agree to the privacy statement by selecting both boxes, entering the Applicant Signature, and selecting Continue.

13. Provide or confirm the information in the Primary contact section of the application. It includes the Your information, Home address, and Contact details pages.

14. The system will verify the Marketplace has your most recent information.

15. Provide or confirm the information in the Household section. It includes the Who’s applying, Medicare, Residence, and Tax household pages.

  • On the Who’s applying? page:

    • Answer whether you want to see if you’re eligible for cost savings.

      • Select No if you chose to accept a reimbursement arrangement (funding) through your employer.

      • Select Yes to see if you are eligible for the PTC. You cannot use employer-provided funding and the PTC at the same time.

      • If you select Yes, you’ll be required to provide information about your income.

    • Add or remove other household members if necessary.

    • Select Continue to proceed to the Medicare page.

16. If you chose to see if you’re eligible for cost savings, answer the income-related information.

  • Select an Income type, answer the related questions, and select Save. After you select Save, you can choose another Income type if necessary.

17. Complete the Additional questions section. The questions vary based on your previous answers.

  • If you are enrolling outside the Open Enrollment Period (OEP), you must answer questions about any upcoming and recent life changes.

  • You’ll be asked if anyone has been offered an Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA). An ICHRA is an employer-offered benefit that provides actively employed individuals with funds to purchase individual health insurance coverage.

18. In the Finalize section, confirm or update the information you previously provided.

19. If you chose the PTC, you’ll be asked to complete the Agreements and Tax attestation pages.

  • On the Agreements page, select whether you agree to have the Marketplace use your income data to renew your eligibility. If you agree, select how long you’d like your eligibility to be renewed, then select Continue to complete the Tax attestation page.

20. On the Sign and submit page, choose to agree or disagree with each statement, type your name exactly as it appears on the application, and select Continue.
