Canceling a Plan

How you cancel (disenroll from) a plan depends on the type of plan, the time of year, and whether or not you want to replace the plan you cancel.

The disenrollment periods listed below may or may not allow you to enroll in another plan. Please contact us at 1-866-322-2824 prior to disenrolling if you would like to enroll in a new plan.

Follow the disenrollment guidelines below for each plan type:

Medicare Advantage Plan

You can disenroll from your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare using:

  • The Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP): October 15 through December 7 each year. The change will take effect on January 1 of the following year.

  • The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period: January 1 through March 31 each year or within the first three months you get Medicare. The change will take effect the first of the month after the plan gets your request.

  • special enrollment period (SEP): There are a variety of life events that could prompt an SEP. The change generally takes effect the first of the month after the plan gets your request.

When you return to Original Medicare, you'll also be able to join a separate Medicare drug plan. Contact us at 1-866-322-2824 to discuss your options. We will advise you on the next steps. 

Prescription Drug Plan

You can disenroll from your Medicare drug plan using:

  • The OEP: October 15 through December 7 each year. The change will take effect on January 1 of the following year.

  • special enrollment period: There are a variety of life events that could prompt an SEP. The change generally takes effect the first of the month after the plan gets your request.

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

You can disenroll from a Medigap plan any time. The change generally takes effect the first of the month after the plan gets your request.

Individual and Family Private Plan

You can disenroll from your Individual and Family Private Plan using:

  • The Open Enrollment Period: November 1 through January 15 each year. If you enroll November 1 through December 15, the change will take effect on January 1. If you enroll December 16 through January 1, the change will take effect on February 1.

  • special enrollment period: There are a variety of life events that could prompt an SEP. The change generally takes effect the first of the month after the plan gets your request.

Individual and Family Marketplace Plan

You can disenroll from your Individual and Family Marketplace Plan using:

  • The Open Enrollment Period: November 1 through January 15 each year. If you enroll November 1 through December 15, the change will take effect on January 1 of the following year. If you enroll December 16 through January 1, the change will take effect on February 1.

  • A special enrollment period: There are a variety of life events that could prompt an SEP. The change generally takes effect the first of the month after the plan gets your request.

Dental, Vision, and Hearing Plans

Stand-alone dental, vision, or hearing plans may have different cancellation rules depending on the carrier. For guidance on the rules, contact the carrier or call us at 1-866-322-2824.
