Death Notification Assistance
We understand the death of your spouse, family member or friend is a hard thing to manage, and it may be difficult to know what steps to take. To help, we've detailed below who you need to call in the coming days.
Contact your local Social Security office or call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778). Notifying Social Security is required to discontinue or adjust the deceased's benefits accordingly.
In most cases, the funeral home reports the person's death to Social Security. If you want them to do so, give the Social Security number to the funeral director.
