Protection Plans Overview

Medical insurance is crucial; however, it's only part of the protection you need. Premium costs, deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, and other health care costs have increased over the last several years and are expected to continue to rise. Protection plans can help reduce exposure and unforeseen out-of-pocket costs. The plans supplement traditional medical insurance or pay a lump sum of cash in the event of a critical illness, accident, or other qualifying event. Plans are available to all Individual and Family Plan (IFP) participants in most states. Plans are available to Medicare participants based on their former employers’ plan offerings.

You may enroll in a protection plan at any time during the year. IFP participants please call us at 1-800-591-2611 if you have any questions. Medicare participants call 1-866-322-2824.

Plans Offered

Via Benefits Insurance Services offers various Protection plans, such as accident, critical illness, disability, and life insurance.

Accident Insurance

Accident insurance pays cash benefits directly to the policyholder in the event of hospitalization or medical treatment due to an accident. The money may help pay deductibles, unexpected medical costs, or everyday living expenses.

Illness Insurance

Illness insurance pays a lump-sum cash benefit directly to the policyholder in the event of a covered illness or specified disease, such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke. The money may be used to pay for whatever you need, including experimental treatments not covered by insurance.

Hospital Indemnity

Hospital indemnity plans pay when you’re admitted and confined to a hospital due to an accident or illness, so long as you meet policy and certificate requirements. Typically, the insurance pays a flat amount for admission and a daily amount for each day of a hospital stay. It can also pay extra benefits for admission to or confinement in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and other benefits and services. The payment may help pay for medical plan deductibles, copays, out-of-network stays, or any other expenses while recovering from an illness or accident. Read Shopping for Hospital Indemnity Plans to learn about enrolling.

Legal Plans

Legal plans provide access to a network of experienced attorneys for you, your spouse or domestic partner, and your dependents. You can ensure your estate planning and retirement plans are updated. You also receive FamilyFirst support. This service supports family members caring for a family member by offering guidance on care and assisting with the coordination of services needed to provide the best care.

Life Insurance

A life insurance policy ensures that if you die while your policy is active, your loved ones will receive a lump-sum payout, known as a death benefit. The death benefit can cover medical bills, education costs, loans, day-to-day costs, funeral arrangements, and more.

International Travel Insurance

Although domestic insurance plans offer adequate coverage within the country, they may not provide the necessary assistance and coverage for international travel. Plans cover things such as, hospitalization, emergency room, trip interruption, and identity theft.

Dental, Vision, and Hearing

While Dental, Vision, and Hearing Plans aren't Protection plans, they do offer you coverage for dental, vision, and hearing services and savings designed to fit your needs and budget. Read Dental, Vision, and Hearing Coverage (Individual and Family Plan} or Medicare Dental, Vision, and Hearing Coverage to learn more.
