How Account Balances are Calculated

Your account balance is calculated according to the rules established by your former employer or benefits provider.

Determining How Your Account Balance is Calculated

To determine how your account balance is calculated, start by selecting View Account in the Available Balance section on the website Dashboard.

The way your account information is presented is based on how your available balance is calculated for the current plan year. To find out how your balance is calculated, review the information below.

Note: No matter what type of reimbursement account you have, you can only submit expenses incurred while you were eligible for the account.

Prior Year Balances Are Unavailable After the Deadline

If your account shows deadlines for when expenses must be incurred and submitted, it has a run-off period that provides a window of opportunity to use last year’s remaining funds on qualified expenses from the prior year. If you don’t submit your prior-year requests by your deadline, last year’s unused funds will be forfeited.

Website Example

In this example, expenses incurred in 2026 must be submitted by 03/31/2027.

The Deadlines for incurring and submitting expenses are displayed, along with the Available Balance, broken down by yearly contributions and payments.

Prior Year Balances Are Available After the Deadline

In the Total Balance section, if you see columns for Year, Year Balance, and Available Balance, your account allows you to use unused funds from prior years toward eligible expenses in the current year. The current year’s balance will be used first before any funds are taken from prior years.

There is a deadline for submitting expenses incurred in the previous year. The deadline to submit expenses is detailed in your Summary of Plan Document. If the deadline passes, the funds can’t be used for expenses from the previous year; however, they are available to use for expenses from the current year and, if unused, will be available to use in future years.

Website Example

The Balance Breakdown section shows the Available Balance for the current year and one year prior. You can select See More Years to see any prior years not shown. You can also select Show More to see additional balance details for a specific year.

In the Total Balance section, under Year Balance, you may see green arrows that indicate unused funds were rolled into the next year.

All Year Balances Are Available

In the Total Balance section, if you see Available From next to each year you’ve had the account, it means unused funds from previous plan years can be used to pay for eligible expenses incurred in the current plan year. In addition, your current available balance may be used to reimburse eligible expenses incurred in prior plan years. Another indication that your account works this way is that the Available Balance shown for the current plan year matches the Available Balance shown for the prior plan year.

Website Example

In this example, funds remaining from 2024 and 2025 can be used for 2026 expenses, and funds from 2026 can be used for expenses from 2024 and 2025. The Total Available Balance shows the funds available from all years.
